Mechanism of action
A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic-acid group that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) with a preferential tendency toward COX-2, reducing the prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation.
Indications
- Relief of pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis (joint degeneration)
- Perioperative pain relief
Contraindications & warnings
- Gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, renal, hepatic, or cardiac impairment, and dehydration
- Pregnancy in general
- Not to be combined with another NSAID or a corticosteroid
Drug interactions
- Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and aminoglycosides
- Increased risk of ulceration with corticosteroids and other anti-inflammatory drugs
