Mechanism of action
A potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that non-selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX), reducing the prostaglandins that cause inflammation, pain, and fever, with a well-known effect against endotoxemia.
Indications
- Pain and inflammation relief in musculoskeletal disorders
- Colic and abdominal pain in horses
- Acute conditions accompanied by fever and endotoxemia
Contraindications & warnings
- Gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding, renal impairment, and dehydration
- Intramuscular injection in cattle may carry a risk of clostridial myositis — the intravenous route is preferred, per the label
- Not to be combined with another NSAID or a corticosteroid
Drug interactions
- Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and aminoglycosides
- Increased risk of ulceration with corticosteroids and other anti-inflammatory drugs
