AntiparasiticsAn antiparasitic of the macrocyclic lactone class (the avermectins). It binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in worms and arthropods, causing hyperpolarization of their nerve and muscle cell membranes, leading to paralysis and death. It binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in worms and arthropods, causing hyperpolarization of their nerve and muscle cell membranes, leading to paralysis and death. It does not normally cross the blood-brain barrier in healthy mammals.
Indications
- Gastrointestinal and lung worms
- External parasites: lice, mange, ticks, and some mites
Contraindications & warnings
- Dog breeds carrying the MDR1/ABCB1 mutation (such as Collies and related breeds) are highly sensitive to neurotoxicity
- Highly toxic to aquatic organisms — avoid contaminating waterways
- Treated dung may temporarily affect beneficial soil insects
Drug interactions
- Drugs that inhibit P-glycoprotein may increase its brain concentration and the risk of neurotoxicity
