Mechanism of action
A lincosamide antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis. Effective against Gram-positive bacteria, anaerobes, and Mycoplasma.
Indications
- Respiratory and joint infections caused by susceptible bacteria
- Mycoplasma infections in pigs and poultry (often combined with spectinomycin)
Contraindications & warnings
- Not to be given to horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, or ruminants — may cause fatal colitis
- Hypersensitivity to lincosamides
Drug interactions
- Antagonism with macrolides and phenicols due to competition for the same binding site
- Enhances neuromuscular blockade with anesthetics and muscle relaxants
Prudent use of antibiotics
Prescribed based on diagnosis and susceptibility testing where possible, to limit antibiotic resistance.
