Mechanism of action
A broad-spectrum, bacteriostatic tetracycline antibiotic. It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA and halting bacterial protein synthesis.
Indications
- Respiratory and systemic infections caused by susceptible bacteria
- Intracellular pathogens (such as Chlamydia and Anaplasma)
- Some cases of eye infection
Contraindications & warnings
- Deposits in growing bones and teeth, causing discoloration — avoided as far as possible in very young and pregnant animals
- Caution in renal or hepatic impairment
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
Drug interactions
- Its efficacy is negated by divalent and trivalent cations (calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum) through the formation of non-absorbable complexes
- Theoretical antagonism with bactericidal beta-lactam antibiotics
Prudent use of antibiotics
Prescribed based on diagnosis and susceptibility testing where possible, to limit antibiotic resistance.
