Procaine Benzylpenicillin

Indications
- Infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria
- Clostridial infections and erysipelas
- Some cases of respiratory infection
Contraindications & warnings
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins
- Not to be given to rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, or horses (disruption of gut flora)
- Possible reactions to the procaine component
Drug interactions
- Theoretical antagonism with bacteriostatic antibiotics
- Synergy with aminoglycosides, without mixing them in the same syringe
Prudent use of antibiotics
Prescribed based on diagnosis and susceptibility testing where possible, to limit antibiotic resistance.
