A natural penicillin (penicillin G) of the beta-lactam class, bactericidal, binding to penicillin-binding proteins and inhibiting cell-wall construction. The procaine formulation slows its release, prolonging its effect. Its spectrum is relatively narrow (predominantly Gram-positive) and it is degraded by beta-lactamase enzymes.
