Mechanism of action
A pleuromutilin antibiotic that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis. Particularly effective against Mycoplasma, Brachyspira, and Gram-positive bacteria.
Indications
- Swine dysentery caused by Brachyspira
- Mycoplasma pneumonia in pigs and poultry
Contraindications & warnings
- Serious interaction with ionophores (monensin, salinomycin, narasin) that may cause severe or fatal toxicity — concurrent or closely-spaced administration is prohibited
- Hypersensitivity to the substance
Drug interactions
- The fundamental interaction with ionophores noted above is the most clinically important
Prudent use of antibiotics
Prescribed based on diagnosis and susceptibility testing where possible, to limit antibiotic resistance.
