Mechanism of action
A long-acting macrolide antibiotic (of the triamilide subclass) that binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis. A single dose provides an effective concentration in lung tissue for days.
Indications
- Respiratory disease in cattle and pigs caused by susceptible bacteria (Mannheimia, Pasteurella, Mycoplasma)
- Bacterial foot rot in cattle
Contraindications & warnings
- Not to be given to horses — macrolides may cause fatal colitis
- Hypersensitivity to macrolides
Drug interactions
- Antagonism with lincosamides and phenicols due to competition for the same binding site
Prudent use of antibiotics
Macrolides are classified as "highest-priority critically important" by the WHO; they are reserved for appropriate cases and prescribed based on susceptibility testing where possible.
