Mechanism of action
A bacteriostatic macrolide antibiotic. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing protein synthesis. It is effective against Gram-positive bacteria and Mycoplasma.
Indications
- Respiratory infections caused by susceptible bacteria
- Mycoplasma infections in poultry and pigs
- Proliferative enteropathy in pigs
Contraindications & warnings
- Not to be given to horses — may cause a potentially fatal colitis
- Hypersensitivity to macrolides
Drug interactions
- Antagonism with lincosamides and phenicols due to competition for the same binding site
Prudent use of antibiotics
Prescribed based on diagnosis and susceptibility testing where possible, to limit antibiotic resistance.
